Name:
Secernia Lambda Grelix
(Sis-ER-nee-ya Lamb-duh Grell-ex)
Age:
17Powers:
1. Secrets
When Secernia touches someone, she can learn a major detail from their long or short term history, without them giving this away willingly. The more a person hides a fact, the clearer it will become to Secernia when she comes in contact with the subject. Usually it is the most relevant fact that she gets, but not always. This power is due to a deal she had made with her inhabiting demon, Daidamus, who knows all secrets and truths.
2. Teleportation
Secernia can, at a whim, cause herself to disappear and instantaneously reappear at a desired location. However, if Secernia does this too many times in a short time frame, she can become dizzy and sometimes gets motion sickness, although this is rare.
3. Manipulate Historical Memory
This power means that Secernia can change the memories of people she speaks to. This power is often used to insert herself into someone's life, or simply to take someone else out of it, but can be used to convince people that they are insane or that someone is after their life. This can only be achieved if she convinces the other person to tell aloud the memory she is planning on editing. The subject will stutter at saying it or falter in the middle of the story, having forgotten what they were saying. When Secernia leaves their presence, they then forget that she was there. This power only effects the target temporarily though, and usually lasts for a time ranging between a week and a month.Family Curse History:
Secernia was born into the Grelix family, which, I'll say right now, has problems. The Grelix family tree is a bit odd, in that they historically do not change their name when they marry, and their children tend to be given the name Grelix as well, even when against the conventional naming practices. The Grelix line is now made up entirely of women due to a particular curse, which I'll go to explain...
Once upon a time in Greece, there was a man named Koro Grelix. Koro was a faithful and religious catholic. A normal man, he went on to have a wife and they went on to have a daughter. The daughter's name was Dorona, A very curious and inquisitive girl, Dorona grew to ask questions that weren't typically asked in the era. In Particular she asked questions about the church. Koro told her what he knew and said that she shouldn't ask so much, and simply have faith in God, as that was what was expected at the time.
But Dorona wouldn't give up that easily. "Is there really a hell? What's it like? Has anyone ever been there? How do you die?" Dorona was insistant at the age of 12, and her father had run out of patience.
"Yes! There is a Hell, and many people have been there, but few come back. Little demons like yourself for example, now be quiet! I'm praying!"
"Demons?" Inquired Dorona, but her father wouldn't answer any more questions.
So Dorona took matters into her own hands. She would find out. One night, Dorona snuck out. She stole books from the chapel and ran into the forest with them under her arm. She wanted to know, and learn about it herself. She just wanted to ask them a few questions is all. She used the priests books and followed the instructions for summoning a Demon... She was more successful than was necessary.
A horde of demons encircled her, making their presence known to her, as every shadow in the forest became one, reaching towards her to try and drag her to the world below. Dorona was brave however, and managed to control them with the words in the priest's books. Her breath was raspy as she read the script, and she felt death breathing on her neck. Her curiosity had left her in quite a predicament.
The Demons stopped at the sound of her voice and instead decided they would try and take her another way. She was weak prey, and they were adamant they get what they wanted.
"We have things you want... We can give you anything at all..." They promised her.
Dorona felt pressured into an agreement, the hungry jaws of beasts in the darkness around her. They would surely kill her and take her soul by force if she did not agree.
"...We can give you Power... Just a small... teeny exchange."
***
The next morning Dorona was missing from the village, and the priest found his books torn into shreds in the forest, profanity scrawled onto the pages of the bible with blood, the trees of that area of the forest burned and ravaged. Everyone thought Dorona dead, and no one had pity for her being so. The town became paranoid, crosses were put on every door, and holy water spritzed on everyone's neck like perfume.
Meanwhile, Dorona had ran through to the opposite side of the forest and to the village beyond, memories of the night overcoming her and forcing her to tears. In her hand she held on to an old blackened pendant, which felt warm and heavy in her grip. Looking at the pendant reminded her again of the bargain.
"Please, Don't kill me!" She had begged them, shaking in terror that night. "I had just.. wanted to know, I didn't mean to anger you!"
"Stupid little girl... We won't kill you... intentionally... yet." A chorus of hellish laughter had filled the air. "Will you take your power? It's a beautiful thing... We can teach you all about Demons then, once you have it..." The laughter caused a ringing in Dorona's ears and she held her knees and rocked herself back and forth. Feeling powerless was indeed a horrible thing, and so Dorona made up her mind...
"Y-y-yes.... yes."
A great gust of horrible oppressive energy whirled around her, all the voices, each and every demon became like the wind and with their high and incessant laughter, their sharp teeth and shadowy forms, poured into Dorona through every orifice, and Dorona had screamed.
The pendant had materialized into her hand, and she gripped it, running away from the forest, knowing she could not go back with this curse new upon her. She couldn't imagine what horrors she had just unleashed, just accepted into herself. She had been damned.
Curse Summary:
The power that Dorona had aquired from the demons had meant that she become one of the early superhumans. Her pendant had to remain with her, and if she parted from it she would become weary and tired until the demons inside her killed her after about a day. This pendant had been a seal of their agreement, and they would destroy her and take her soul if she tried to back out of it. The demons were more than happy with her side of the bargain. Every daughter in Dorona's line would be born with the curse, a Demon for each of them, Power for each of them, an object for each of them. The demons, after all, wanted a host. They wanted a body to control when they saw fit, and were happy to grant a little measly power in return.
Personal History:
Foreword: Each Italic centered word is like a miniature chapter in Secernia's life. This is so that you won't feel so bogged down by a huge block of text- as it was before I added them in. I hope that it adds to the story of Secernia and doesn't seem too cheesy or cliche. Really, they're just useful as reference points.
Existence
Secernia Grelix is the youngest in the Grelix line. Her mother as well was affected by the curse.
Secernia's mother was a Surgeon. It was during her mother's final year in med-school that she went to a night-club and had a one-night-stand that resulted in Secernia. Secernia's demon object was a golden key, which materialized in her arms her first night alive. It was fashioned into a necklace for her, and her mother was ever so attentive to make sure she didn't pull it off.
She was a spoilt child in her toddler years, whining and crying for attention. Her mother gave her a nanny because the shift at the hospital didn't leave enough time or energy to deal with a child. Her nanny loved her, reading stories and singing lullabies to her. Secernia reacted bitterly to her, angry at her mother for leaving her behind.
Her mother lost her job as a surgeon due to malpractice when Secernia was 4. Falling into depression, her mother wouldn't speak to her, only to the demon inside. Secernia's nanny quit and no new nanny was hired.
Then, at 5 years of age, Secernia began school. She talked back to her teachers, and showed no remorse for her numerous pranks. She learned how to Teleport when she was 6 years old as her first power, and used this to get in and out of trouble awfully quick.
Any friends that she did have, she betrayed as fast as she made. Outwardly she would act playful and joyous, but when a prank didn't work out, it was her accomplices that would be subject to her pointed finger and the words 'She did it!' Later, she learned to set other people up in a far more graceful and believable way.
Scar
When Secernia was about 8 years old, her mother finally snapped. When Secernia came in from school, she was sitting at the table with a cup of tea awaiting her. "Good news!" She said merrily to her daughter. The first words in years. "We're going to make sure you'll never be devoured by the curse! We know how to keep you safe from them! Drink up!"
There was no way Secernia was going to drink that tea. This was far too weird. "No." She said, and her mother's happy face dropped, to be replaced by a vicious and tense expression. Her mother grabbed her around the shoulders and pulled her from the stool, letting it fall with a Thunk. She pulled a cloth out from her pocket and put it to her mouth. She had obviously thought that reaction through. "We're going to save you Sweetie, Don't say No to me... That's it... Good girl..." She said through her teeth. Secernia's eyes looked around frantically, then drooped until she lay limp in her mother's arms.
When Secernia woke up, her mother was sewing her bare chest up a line between her ribs. Secernia wasn't wearing her necklace anymore. Secernia knew that without the necklace she was done for, and she glanced around frantically for it, a headache pounding so hard against her skull she could swear her brain was trying to escape. Dizzy, she fell back down. Her mother brought her a cool cloth and put it to her head. Her chest ached, her fresh scar oozed, and she felt as though she could puke.
"It's inside... " Her mother explained to her, blood covering her hands and clothes. Secernia would have teleported away, if only she could manage to even stand. "The operation went fine, it's beside your heart, you won't ever have to worry about losing it!" Her mother let out a horribly light laugh, and Secernia felt positive that this was not her mother speaking. This was her mother's demon. Her body did not reject the key lodged in her chest, because the demon inside ensured it act like an extra organ.
Once Secernia was well enough to stand, her mother started talking again, about things she could do to help Secernia. Secernia was terrified of her mother, and although she did teleport away, she found that she had no friends left, and that her mother would always find her. She could not escape as long as her mother remembered she existed. That's when she developed her next power.
Re: Memory
Secernia was now 10. Once she was home from school, her mother began to fix her tea and talk about how she could straighten out her nose if she wanted, or if she thought her back felt crooked.
"I don't live here." Secernia said to her. Although really she hadn't a clue why that popped out of her mouth, she felt confident saying it.
"Why now of course you live here! You're my daughter!" Her mother replied like they were playing a game. Realization dawned in Secernia's eyes when she said this, and on impulse she replied,
"No I'm not your daughter. You do not have a daughter. You live alone here, and you are crazy."
Then the strangest thing happened.
"No... You're not my daughter... I don't have a daughter... I'm crazy... all alone... so lonely..."
Her mother looked in a daze as she repeated what Secernia said. Secernia took the opportunity to pack a bag full of clothes, her mother's money, and food and walked out while her mother just sat there, her tea going cold.
Secernia hadn't a clue where to go, but she tried out her new power on strangers, experimenting with it. She realized she had to get the other person to tell her something for her to change it. This experimentation usually came from her going to restaurants and changing the special of the day when they told her. "No, the special of the day isn't Tuna-fish salad, it's Raspberry Ice-cream." She would watch as the waiter went and told the wrong special to the customers and laugh quietly to herself. 'Changing memories... How useful...' She thought.
She would knock on people's doors and tell them she was taking a census for the apartment complex, that she was the daughter of the landlord. "How many people live here?" They would be confused, and say that that information should be in the lease, and she would insist they answer her. "Four, but-" She would interrupt then, "Five." "Five, but-... What was I saying?" They would correct themselves. She would walk past them and tell them who she was as if part of a normal conversation. Scratching their heads, they would just think they were having a weird day. Soon, they'd forget they ever had that conversation, and feel like she had lived there for years.
After a week or two, her new room-mates would wake up from her spell, and ask her the question "Who the hell ARE you?!" At which point she would teleport out of the building, and towards the next place to stay.
Eventually, she became bored with this way of life, and decided to try to do something different. While staying with a random happy-family at the age of 12, and while they all went off for dinner and she said she would watch the house, Secernia decided to ask for another power.
Summon
She looked online for how to summon these things, and the directions were fairly straight forward, kind of like the movies. Secernia read about drawing a circle around her to protect her from evil forces taking over, and laughed aloud. There was no point, was there, considering what she planned.
The room had been lit by cheap candles, and Secernia didn't put on an enchanting voice when calling forth her demon. She demanded his presence, she didn't ask for it. She felt her heart pound, though she herself was not nervous. So what if it steals her soul and punishes her forever. No big deal.
Suddenly, there was a huge aching pain in her chest, and she thought she was having a heart attack. She clutched her chest and felt too hot beneath her skin. Sweating she felt a ringing pierce her ears. She thought she heard the word 'Daidamus', but then, even that was the faintest muffled whisper. It only alerted her to look up.
The Demon had arrived. It had been with her her entire life. His body was tall, 7' in fact, and his fingertips rest on his knees when he stood upright. He had no eyes. It was not that he had empty sockets, but more that there was no place for them on his face. Nor mouth, as though it was covered up with flesh and filled with blood. His nose was small, and he breathed through this with huge intakes of breath, as he had no other way to breathe, not that he needed to. His ears were also quite large, and he heard her heart beating. He was after all, physically beside it while inhabiting the key.
Despite his lack of eyes, it was as if Daidamus could see her, and turned his face in her direction. Secernia felt freaked out for a moment, but then recalled that she didn't care if she died. "I want more power." She said to him, her voice brash and forthright. "You already have my bloodline, what do you want next?"
For a moment the demonic creature just sat there, his black hair matted down his back with blood. He reached out one of his awkward arms and placed his hand on her head.
She suddenly knew him. Daidamus was his name. In life, he had been a noble, rich and greedy. He had made many friends and had a loving family. Then, there was a war. They said that anyone hiding fugitives would be killed. If they came forward, they would be given a reward for their efforts. Daidamus had seen the promise in the situation and sold out many families, as many as he could find. He gained their trust to betray them. Eventually, he sold out his own family. In life, he had been known to be unable to keep a secret, and endangered, and in many cases destroyed, many lives in his selfish lack of restraint.
So, as a punishment in hell, he was told all things. Every fact in the world, Every secret was spoken to his ears. The urge to share these secrets, to tell all these things to the whole world, to all of hell, was so great, and yet... They stole his voice, they stole his mouth, and they stole his eyes so that he could not convey any emotion, he could not convey any message to the outside world. He was Daidamus, the demon of Secrets.
But Secernia was a part of him as much as he was a part of her. They were inseparable, after all. "W-what do I want from you?" He asked her in her mind. "I want to be F-f-free... Let me feel the world through YOU some.. times.. ... I'll tell you a S-Secret.. that will be my gift. Power of sss-sSECRETS..." His inner voice sounded strained, and fluctuated in volume.
Secernia looked up at the demon before her. Now that he shared this story with her, she felt less afraid of him, not that she ever would admit to feeling so in the first place. "Sounds good." She replied coolly. A giddy laugh filled the air and Daidamus disappeared.
The next day, she bumped into someone in the street, and she heard the voice again whispering to her. "D-ddrug addict..." She nearly laughed out loud and the man she had bumped into looked back at her with fright, and fidgeted with his grocery bag. She bumped into people intentionally just to get information. "P-ppedophile. CHEATER. Murderrrer. C-Crazy." Shaking hands became a little laugh for her as well. She was indeed very happy with her arrangement. Then, Daidamus took his side of the bargain.
Control
At the age of 14, she was waiting at a bus stop, when a few boys older than her thought she was easy. They pushed at her and tried to press-gang her into going with them. Secernia would have just teleported away but she was waiting for the bus, and she couldn't teleport that far just yet. She just told them to "Go Fuck yourselves." And they reacted violently, pushed her against the wall and pinning her down. Okay, this made her afraid, she thought to herself. It just made Daidamus angry.
She could feel him bubbling up, she clutched at her chest and could hardly breath. "Oh God... He's coming.." The boys just laughed at her and told her to shut the fuck up, though one or two of them thought she was a crazy bitch. "Get a-away.. Oh s-s-shaahahaaa- AAH ommmmhmm" Her mouth and eyes pursed closed. She tried to scream beneath her closed mouth as her lips slowly morphed together, her eyelids melding to create a single piece of flesh. Then, her vocals failed. Behind her eyelids was not the nothingness of Daidamus, but instead her irises glowed through her skin a golden-color, like that of her key. Beneath her clothes, The area around her heart also glowed gold, in the outline of the key itself.
Daidamus simply knew where things were, he didn't have to see. He knew that two of the boys carried knives. He knew how to distract them. He knew where to stab for a fatality. Once that was done, he spent the rest of the day sitting in the Park. People passing thinking she was an invalid, and children cried and ran away at seeing the faceless creature that was Secernia.
The next morning she woke up on that park bench. Her mouth felt like cotton, and her eyes felt like the sandman spent his holidays there. It was painful to blink, painful to speak. Maybe, she thought to herself, she had gone a step too far... She didn't remember much from the night before as Daidamus, only that she had killed those boys and left their bodies atop one another at the bus-stop. She had taken the knife with her.
The cops would certainly be after her. But then again, she thought, all the witnesses had been taken care of... Secernia decided she had to find a way to get herself into a better condition to fight. The better equipped she was to deal with matters herself, perhaps the less likely Daidamus was to take control, although if all he was going to do was sit on a park bench and feel the breeze, she had little to worry about. She didn't mind that Daidamus had killed someone, she only bothered about getting caught for it. What truly concerned her is that she had gotten in that situation to begin with. Surely she should have been able to handle herself, she thought. Secernia then heard talk of Solstice Academy.
Education
She went there shortly after the incident. Her first year of school, she made a lot of mischief in the corridors, but was reprimanded for her actions and vandalism. As a result she has continued to do so in a far more discrete manner, breaking the school rules subtly as to avoid suspicion and punishment.
The most important thing about her first year is that she managed to convince everyone there that she could not lie as part of her powers. She built this reputation by acting completely unable to physically say something she knew was false for the entire first year of school. After that, She allowed rumour to take it's course. Whenever she says something, people believe it because of her reputation. In reality, she can lie very easily and with astounding grace, that one cannot really tell the difference between her honesty and her lies. This set-up she finds very effective in manipulating others and toying with their emotions.
That first year, Secernia was quick to learn to fight, battling whoever she could get her hands on. Teleportation became something she used regularly in battle to trick and confuse the opponent. She put a lot of effort into honing her outward image as strong and honest the first year. It would certainly serve her well in the future.
In her second year of Solstice, Secernia's eye was caught on an older boy in the school. She got close to him and asked him about his love life. He was happily in love with a girl in his year. "No you aren't. You're happily in love with me. We're dating. You don't even know that girl." She hissed to him, and his memories were altered accordingly. Taking advantage of the opportunity, She then went up with him to his dorm, and fucked him. Of course, his real relationship didn't last too long after that, even after he remembered his true girlfriend.
Secernia found their reaction hilarious, quite like watching a soap opera on TV. She spread the story around that he had slept with her behind his girlfriends back, and when people disbelieved her she told them, "Have you forgotten I cannot lie?". She found their shock and sometimes their horror very entertaining. She gained enemies very quickly, and this she accepted as simple fact.
It was in her 3rd year at Solstice that she gained a true friend, Kikime, whom shares a dorm with her. She found that although they are cruel to one another and toy with the idea of murdering the other in their sleep, Kikime is good company. She is one that can tolerate her devious pranks on others without getting high-and-mighty about the moral basis of it at all, and this gains her Secernia's respect.
Personality:
A Mischevious, Fun-loving individual, Secernia loves pranks and tom-foolery. She can be quite cunning in this way and likes creating little surprises for people. She enjoys interfering in the lives of others, and can be competitively minded, trying to outshine another in whatever way possible.
Secernia is a fantastic liar. She has spent years convincing the school that she cannot tell a lie, and with their faith in her honesty, she can bend the truth to her hearts content within reasonable boundaries, and the general public believe it to be fact. She keeps good track of her lies so not to ever change the story and get caught out. Her expression when forming a lie is entirely kept straight, and she has the ability to stare someone right in the eyes when doing so.
She can be very cruel and sadistic. Her emotions seem completely detached from the emotions of others. Although she doesn't often let people see this side of her, it is quite prevalent. Great entertainment comes from the misery of others, and the heartache of another is but a joke to her. Secernia feels no regret for things that she has done, and has no remorse.
Overall, Secernia is outwardly pleasant and seemingly understanding of others. This is in order to gain more information and ultimately get what she wants from the person. She will always introduce herself with a handshake so to learn something vital from the subject. To others she acts cool and calm, although she can come off as a little cocky, she's friendly and nice to be around outwardly.
Appearance:
Secernia has cherry-red hair about shoulder length which match her dark red-brown eyes. Although her eye colour is abnormal, it is dark enough so that not many really bother to see it as such. She's a tall girl at 5'7", with a toned build. She has a small crook in her nose, and full lips. Her eyes look sharp and contemplative, giving her an air of intelligence only aided by the presence of glasses.
Down the center of the ribcage once can clearly see a permanent scar from her mother's surgery. On her back there is a large tattooed portrait of Daidamus she had drawn out for the tattooist, surrounded by ancient greek symbols she found on the internet. Daidamus' key was drawn on the middle of his chest in the tattoo. Her skin tone is only slightly tanned despite her greek ancestry, as the bloodline has been mixed with a long line of non-europeans.
Secernia's fashion sense is very simple, though she can be quite stylish in a Mediterranean-influenced kind of way, with a brown leather jacket over a thin black tank and skinny jeans with brown knee-high flat-heeled boots.
