"That's it, Gabrielle. Deep breaths." Rust gently helped, honestly not knowing what else to do here. He just sat and mentally berated himself. Had he known that this reaction would come about...
But you didn't. Next time, you keep your mouth shut, y'hear me?
Bringing himself back to the real world, he nodded, smiling a little bit at her description.
"Really? That's really cool." he complimented, trying not to excite her too much. "Least telekinesis is easy to hide..."
Holding up his arm, Rust concentrated for a moment, before the Astral Arm, glowing blue and ghostlike above his own, materialised with a whisper of air. The strange claw like fingers flexed with Rust's own as it floated, seemingly unconnected.
"...this is mine. A bit flashier, but nowhere near as useful."

"Not easy to hide if it's mine." She tapped her temple. "Wires are all crossed up. Whatever I s-send out gets all messed up, gets too strong. I can't lift things without crushing them, accidentally took out a wall."
She looked at the glowing blue arm, then reached out to poke it. "W-what can yours do? Because if nothing else, you're sorted for r-raves."

Rust winced.
Man, you are just on FIRE with the comments today. Keep it up, see if you can make this any better!
He was jolted out of his thoughts by the poke on the Astral Arm. He nodded, grateful for the change of topic onto his own rather than him digging himself deeper.
"Well, it can mimic the limb I summon it over, which is kinda cool, but if I concentrate, it can act independently too." he explained. "It's also stronger and more durable, despite it's look, than my normal pair. Can also do this."
Upon a mental command, the ghostly limb formed a fist and grew in size by at least half. Rust let out a breath and the limb shrank back down to it's normal size.
"Lastly...err...it's better to show this one."
Reaching into his bag with his regular left arm, he offered a spare tennis ball to Gabrielle.
"Toss it as hard as you can off the ship."

"You must be a real bastard to beat in arm wrestling contests." Gabrielle remarked, as the arm grew in size. She put on a voice as similar to Rustys' as she could manage. "What do you mean, I can't use it? It's my arm!"
She smiled a bit at her own joke, then took the proffered ball, walked over to the side of the ship with it and tossed it into the air. Just as it began to fall again, it was suddenly hit out to sea by an invisible force.
"Hard enough?"

Rust chuckled at her joke.
"Hey, British accent is tough to pull off. You managed it well!" he complimented, relaxing a little now that Gabrielle seemed to be feeling better. "And, yeah, you're right. So many wasted opportunities."
Seeing her simply toss it slightly into the air, Rust was about to correct her and say to throw it off the ship as far as she could. He didn't need to. Her telekinesis kicked in and flung the ball off the ship with force.
Reacting quickly, Rust thrust his right arm forward and the Astral Arm followed in the movement. However, it then stretched itself out at high speed, easily catching up to the ball that was now about 25 feet away. With a recoiling motion, Rust reeled the Arm back in, which then deposited the ball into his own upturned hand. With another whisper of air, the Arm and the glow disappeared.
He grinned.
"And that's what else it can do."

Gabrielle watched as the glowy blue arm grabbed the ball and absently wiped away the blood that had started to trickle from her nose with her sleeve.
"Would you believe that I wasn't let take part in competitive sports?" she said lightly, then with a grin,"Next time I'll hit it harder."

Rust just stared before he groaned, rubbing his face with his hands.
"Gabrielle, if your powers hurt you like that, you shoulda just said so..." he said in a pained tone. "I know you probably don't think it's a big deal or anything, but damn it, woman, you've made me feel bad now!" That last line was clearly a joke, but then her got a bit more formal.
"Seriously though, are you okay? And 30 feet seems to be my max so far so don't hit it THAT much harder."

"H-hurt me like what?" Gabrielle asked, confused, then noticed the blood on her hand. She shook her head, laughing and wiped the blood on on her trousers.
"No, it's nothing. It's just a nosebleed. Didn't even feel it. Trust me, I've had a lot worse done to me. Hell, I've done worse to myself. Besides, I'm a real fast healer. So relax."

"Done...worse...?"
If you're any type of sane man, you will move quickly on and NEVER revisit this conversation under sound body and mind, do you understand?!
Shaking his head, Rust waved off the question.
"Never mind. I'll take your word for it." he muttered, before double checking the land. It was a LOT closer now.
"Guessing we're hitting the island soon." Rust noted conversationally. "Not a moment too soon. Could do with a nice cold glass of Coke."

"Personally, I could go for a drink. If this is in international waters, there's no drinking age. Then again, it is a school...."
She thought for a moment then looked over at him as she leant against the rails.
"The, uh, remark about doing worse to myself was kind of bad, wasn't it? I-it's not really that sinister, I mean, I don't go chopping off bodybits or anything like that, not for fun. I-I did chop off my finger, but I was cooking. Not c-cooking my finger, just in general, and the knife slipped."
She put up her hands. "It's okay, it grew back!"

"Hehe, not a problem. I just don't drink. Never have. Couldn't stand the stuff. I took up smoking for a year instead before deciding to quit. Helluva lot worse for ya." Rust explained with a shrug.
Again however, Gabrielle seemed determined to dig herself in deeper and deeper. Again, Rust's eyes widened and again, his eyebrow arched higher and higher until he looked like a certain emoticon.
o.0
After the final declaration of Growing It Back, Rust just stared for roughly ten seconds...before helplessly smirking and breaking down into laughter as he leaned over the edge of the safety rail, burying his head in his folded arms. He literally could not stop laughing.
"Oh GOD, Gabrielle! Thank Christ you're the first person I ran into!" he eventually got out as he calmed down. "Seriously! I was kinda worried everyone here would be a massive stick in the mud but god damn, thanks for that!"
Finally getting himself under control, he wiped an eye then offered her his hand again.
"I'm figuring this is the start of a beauuuuuutiful friendship, don't you agree?" the teen grinned at her, still recovering from his laughing fit.

Gabrielle looked incredibly confused at first, then smiled and shook his hand, assuming that's what you were supposed to do in situations like this.
"Uh, sure. Yeah. Yeah, that sounds good." she said, then added "And growing back a finger thing r-really isn't that bad. It's my other 'thing'. I should have been clearer, huh?"

"What's happened, happened." Rust responded. "Don't focus on the should have and would haves and just relax. Honestly? I think it's pretty cool. But what do I know?" he shrugged.
Looking out into the horizon again, he grumbled as the island appeared to not be getting any closer.
"Anyway, Gabrielle," he started once again. "You looking forward to this whole Academy thing? The ad looks great on paper, but I honestly was curious as to what other people would think of it..."

She shrugged and folded her arms.
"Honestly, I d-don't really know." she said, looking out towards the island then back at him. " I mean, I'm kind of looking forward to it because it'll be the first time I've ever met people like me, been surrounded by them. First time I've ever had a damn chance to learn."
She made a face and laughed. "People kind of stop you practising your telekinesis once it causes property damage, and cities don't have much in the way of open, dog-free space. "

Rust laughed alongside her, enjoying himself. She was just a normal girl, deep down. They were all normal people, end of the day. It's just most saw the power and not the person behind it. Which sucked, but what can you do. Haters gonna hate and all that.
"I can see why." he eventually replied. "Plus, I bet you can get stronger with it or something like that. Would be cool to practice your brain power in a way that didn't involve hitting the books, right?" The mechanic grinned at his crappy joke.
Looking out to the island getting slowly closer and closer, another question came to mind. Hopefully, it'd work out because this would be an awesome chance.
"So... you have a dorm mate yet? I got assigned Dorm Number 9, so... here's hoping?"

"Yeah, last thing I want is for another library to throw me out." Gabrielle said with a grin. "As for my dorm, just let me check."
She patted her pockets and pulled out a page, scanning through it. She shook her head.
"Nope. I got Dorm 7," she said, putting away the page, "but if you're really wild to live with me, I can always ask to transfer." she said. "It'd be pretty nice to have a dormmate that I already know and that isn't a absolute bast-twit. Besides, seven is not my lucky number."
|
|
|
Post by JDGreat on Jun 24, 2012 15:53:01 GMT -8
"Kinda cliche too, number 7." Rust agreed. "And honestly, I'm not even sure we're allowed to do that. They may have tailor made it so that we're paired up with specific people. Ruffling their system on the day of arrival doesn't seem like that good a plan... Shame though, it'd probably be a blast living with ya."
He gave the matter some thought.
"Ah, but what the hell. We'll probably have a dorm room party or something going on since it's our first time here, am I right? You're free to swing by my place any time, Gabrielle. Judging by the number, you'll only be down the hall from me anyway, so we can always meet up whenever we want, right?"

Gabrielle shrugged off her disappointment and laughed. "You're going to regret saying that, Rust. I'm going to be over every day now, just floating around like really, really persistent, uh, lichen?"
She paused, thought about that simile and decided that it just wasn't worth salvaging.
"Anyway, uh.... I'll make cookies."

"Eh, not a problem. I'll just make sure I'm decently dressed all the time, because wouldn't that be awkward as hell? Even the other way round." the mechanic grinned to indicate a clear joke. No way in hell would he be caught ogling a woman in that way, he respected them too much.
"And cookies are good. Cookies are always good." he agreed. "Get those, a couple of DVDs or a games console or something and we'll throw a house party."

"Don't worry, Rust. If I walk in on you in, u-uh," she flushed slightly, "a state of u-undress, I'll j-just r-run away, then come back later and b-b-burn the dorm down."
She paused.
"That was a joke, by the way. J-just saying. I'd p-probably just give you c-cookies and then never talk to you again. Well, excepting said house parties of course. Can't resist a good house party."

Kinda got that. His brain said sarcastically, but Rust wisely kept his mouth shut. Instead, he thought of something else instead.
"So, Gabrielle?" he asked, trying to get her to calm down enough so that she didn't stutter as much. "What kind of things do you like to do in your spare time? Any interesting hobbies or what not?"
He pulled a face.
"Look, I know I'm about three steps away from identity fraud here, but honestly, all I'm trying to do is make a friend here."
Rust paused, mulling over a joke.
Go for it.
"So, what's your mother's maiden name then?"

"H-hobbies? Uh, I... Oh God, this is so nerdy, but-" she covered her face with her hands. "I collect and paint Warhammer figurines. 40k. I have others too, I mean, I play videogames. And violin, I play violin." Violin was cool, right?
She pointed over at the case under the bench.
"I'm actually decent at it too." she said, then tilted her head, not really sure where he was going with his new question.
"It's Viaris. Same as mine."

"Oh sweet, Warhammer?! I used to collect those as a kid!" Rust grinned. "Didn't really play with them, just liked assembling them really. Painting, I sucked at. Mom used to do it with me."
The mechanic looked at his hands.
"I guess I've always liked mechanics and stuff, even when I was young." he muttered to himself, before continuing. "Videogames, we can get along with too. Actually brought a few consoles along. Afraid I don't play an instrument though."
He shrugged.
"Meh, two out of three ain't bad, I suppose."
He groaned as her expression changed to confusion.
"Crappy, crappy joke I stole from a comedian. Don't worry about it."

"Painting is what I've pretty good at." She wiggled her fingers at him. "I've got pianist's fingers, my papa says. I'm surprised you're not better at it, since I'd guess you're pretty good with your hands. Could you show me some stuff, actually?"
She stopped and blushed deeply, her face feeling hot enough to cook eggs on.
"B-because y-you're a mechanic, I mean." she said, stumbling over her clarification. "A-and I have a m-motorbike at ho-home. N-not anything else. Just that."
She looked over her shoulder, at the sea and started contemplating throwing herself over.

Luckily for Gabrielle, Rust hadn't noticed her accidental innuendo.
"Yeah, if you've got the specs for the bike, I could give it a look see. Normally with most problems with it, you have to jerk the gear stick about quite a bit to get any sort of reaction out of it. And while the other problem are for it getting too hot, all you need to do is to just keep it in a dark secluded area so you can cool it off. Or cover it in water and watch the steam rise off it, it's pretty cool actually."
He had no idea what he was doing to the poor girl, but he kept going, unintentionally adding to the image in her head.
"...you doing alright, Gabrielle? You look like you may need to get out of the sun a bit."
